By the early 1950s, Fort Lauderdale’s beach area was well-developed, with both “mom and pop” motels, as well as grand hotels like the Lauderdale Beach and Trade Winds shown at the center of this postcard. A great boon to the beach and all of Fort Lauderdale’s marine and tourist industry was the completion of the Bahia Mar marina, shown at far left. (FLHS P1526)

In the 1950s, Bahia Mar boating enthusiasts organized the “Festival of Venice,” an annual event featuring street dances, boat races, and of course, a boat parade. In this photo, a bevy of local beauties and socialites greet the crowd from aboard Captain Al Start’s cruise boat, New River Queen, c. 1955. (Gene Hyde Collection, FLHS H9126A.7)
